Beaufort County Community College is aiming to improve the health and fitness of citizens of its service area. The Beau-FITT Relaoded program will start with a Kick-Off Event on Sept 20th from 4-5 pm. At Festival Park, on the Waterfront in Washington. The exercise sessions will include giveaways and a chance to win a Garmin Fit band. Eight other monthly sessions will be held at the college in Building 10, Multi Purpose room following the kick off event.
“This is a great way to start your exercise program,” says Julie Crippen, BCCC Coordinator of Special Projects. “Last year the people in the Beau-Fitt program lost 147.5 pounds and walked enough steps to walk around the earth. 23 people walked over a million steps. The fitness program is part of a grant through MDC Healthy Places, an initiative to find ways to incorporate community colleges as change agents in improving community health outcomes by conducting research and analysis of the colleges’ current and potential roles in influencing healthy behaviors in their communities. Vidant Beaufort Hospital partners with the College to sponsor the eight month health and wellness program, specifically by providing health assessments to the participants. Other contributors include K.B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, Vidant Wellness Center, Fitness Unlimited, Raised in the Barn Farm, Cross Therapeutics, Washington Parks and Recreation, Beaufort County Health Department, the Public Health Foundation, and Healthy Places NC.
