BCCC Foundation Announces Scholarship Recipients



The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients. The BCCC Foundation anticipates awarding $150,000 in scholarships during the 2018-2019 academic year. Registration for spring classes is now open for returning and new students.

Melissa Adams, 48, received the Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarship. The Jamesville resident is part of the nursing program and plans to work in hospice care. The daughter of Avery and Brenda Hilton of Chocowinity, wife of Timothy Adams and a mother of two, she attended Chocowinity High School and holds an Associate in Applied Science in Paralegal Technology. Scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing a career in the medical field. Qualifying students will have a 2.5 GPA or greater and must be a resident of Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell or Washington County. Student must demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to current or former employees of Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy.

Cecelia Angelica Claudio, 25, received the Jody Parrish Scholarship. The Washington resident is working toward an Associate Degree in Nursing and plans to get a doctorate degree. The daughter of Margarita Claudio of Aurora, she attended Southside High School and holds an Associate in General Education. She currently works at Vidant Medical Center as a care partner/nurse aide II. Margaret “Margie” Holder established this endowment in 2012 to memorialize her beloved son Jody. Margie was also an early childhood instructor at BCCC, and during her tenure, raised funds to help several BCCC students.

Jamie Davenport, 18, received the Robert C. Page Scholarship. The Farmville resident is working toward an Associate Degree in Nursing and plans to work as a nurse practioner. The daughter of Bob and Caroline Davenport of Farmville, she attended Farmville Central High School. Established by Lena H. Page, RN in 1992 in memory of her husband, this annual scholarship is awarded to a nursing student who demonstrates high academic achievement and financial need. Mrs. Page graduated from the BCCC Nursing program in 1968.

Hollie Huffman, 18, received the Ruth Scoble Scholarship. The Plymouth resident is working toward an Associate in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education and plans to become a teacher at a local daycare or elementary school. The daughter of Thomas and Wendy Huffman of Plymouth, she attended the Northeast Regional School of Biotechnology & Agriscience (NERSBA) and holds an Associate in Science.

Caroline Rhodes, 18, received the Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarship. The Greenville resident is working toward an Associate Degree in Nursing and plans to work as an oncology nurse. The daughter of William and Mary Rhodes of Greenville, she attended D.H. Conley High School. She currently works at Harris Teeter as a cashier. Scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing a career in the medical field. Qualifying students will have a 2.5 GPA or greater and must be a resident of Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell or Washington County. Student must demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to current or former employees of Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy.

Lisa Robinett, 38, received the Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarship. The New Bern resident is part of the medical laboratory technology program and plans to get a Bachelor’s of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science. The daughter of Karen Smith of Louisa, Ky., wife of Tom Robinett and a mother of two, she attended Lawrence County High School and holds an Associate in General Education. Scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing a career in the medical field. Qualifying students will have a 2.5 GPA or greater and must be a resident of Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell or Washington County. Student must demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to current or former employees of Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy.

Brittany Wiggins, 20, received the Tayloe Memorial Scholarship. The Vanceboro resident is part of the Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses program and plans to pursue a master’s degree or a doctorate after graduating from East Carolina University. The daughter of James and Lori Wiggins of Vanceboro, she attended West Craven High School. Mrs. Sam Tim (Tay) Carter, with encouragement from her children Libba, Lou, Clay, and Mary, started the Tayloe Family Endowment in 2003, in memory of her grandfather, Dr. David Thomas Tayloe. The endowment also honors his numerous descendants who have made significant contributions to the medical community of Beaufort County. Scholarships generated by this endowment are awarded to BCCC students enrolled in any medically related program.

Preston Woolard, 21, received the Tony Capehart and Lucille Dibble Scholarships. The Jamesville resident is part of the electrical engineering technology program. The son of Curtis Woolard and Kellie Hardison of Jamesville, he attended Bear Grass Charter School. This endowment memorializes Washington native, Tony Capehart, for his successful 36-year career in industrial management and for his life-long service to his community. He also taught classes in Industrial Management at BCCC and saw first-hand how a community college education can change lives. Established in 2007, the scholarship this endowment provides is awarded to BCCC students who show need or promise in Electrical Engineering or Industrial Technology programs. Lucille Edwards Carowan Dibble was memorialized after her death in November 2006 by her husband of two and a half years, Louis Dibble, and her daughters Gladys, Martha, Mary, and Clarissa. Lucille Carowan Dibble chaired both a bond issuance committee and a College Parallel committee for BCCC. She worked in education and served on the Washington City Board of Education. Her scholarship assists students in industrial technology.
