Foundation Scholarships

The BCCC Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization established in 1984 to provide community-based support for the college in achieving its educational and workforce development goals. Through the Foundation, generous donors provide support for scholarships, institutional programs, faculty and staff development and facility improvements. The BCCC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization and all contributions are tax-deductible.

Endowments & Scholarships

ALBERT JOWDY ENDOWMENT
Established in 1991 by family and friends in memory of Albert Jowdy, the longtime owner of Jowdy’s Radio - Appliance store in Washington, NC, this endowment awards an annual scholarship to a second-year student enrolled in BCCC’s Electronics Engineering program.

ALICE AGNEW ENDOWMENT
Alice L. Collis Agnew’s children Tom, Jo, Beth, Chris, Virgil, and Mary established this endowment in 2006. Mrs. Agnew and her family were so impressed with the quality of care she had received in the Beaufort County Nursing Home that they decided to use the endowment’s earnings to provide a scholarship with preference given to a nursing assistant who wants to further their career in a medical field.

ANTHONY “TONY” A. CAPEHART, JR. ENDOWMENT
This endowment memorializes Washington native, Tony Capehart, for his successful 36 year career in industrial management and for his life-long service to his community. He also taught classes in Industrial Management at BCCC and saw first-hand how a community college education can change lives. Established in 2007, the scholarship this endowment provides is awarded to BCCC students who show need or promise in Electrical Engineering or Industrial Technology programs.

ARCHBELL / WILKINSON ENDOWMENT
Established in 1990 by Mr. John A. Wilkinson, in memory of his uncle, Mr. J.E. Archbell (a leader in the tobacco industry), this endowment is now used to fund the BCCC Ambassador program and FFA scholarships. Wilkinson, who resided in Pantego, was a prominent lawyer who valued the immense power of education. He was a leader in contributing to the Foundation and was among the first donors to start an endowment. The Wilkinson Endowment seeks to promote and reward excellence.

ART AND ALICE KEENEY – EAST CAROLINA BANK ENDOWMENT
In honor of Art Keeney’s retirement in June of 2009, as CEO of East Carolina Bank (ECB), which is based in Engelhard, NC, the ECB board of directors established this endowment to recognize both Art and his wife Alice for their tremendous accomplishments at the bank, in the Hyde County community, and throughout the ECB service area. First preference for these scholarships goes to students residing in Hyde County, who have a GPA of 2.5 or better, and demonstrate need.

BARBARA LaBARBERA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established by Civitan on the Pamlico in 2015 to memorialize charter member Barbara LaBarbera, the annual scholarship will be awarded to students accepted to the school of nursing who demonstrate academic achievement and financial need. Mrs. LaBarbera was a longtime resident of Beaufort County and passionately and continually showed her concern and care for others in need. Recipients must reside in Beaufort County, have a current GPA of 3.0 or higher, and demonstrate participation in voluntary services meeting individual or community needs.

BCCC FACULTY SENATE SCHOLARSHIP
Established and funded by the BCCC Faculty, students must have a minimum GPA 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need and cannot receiving any additional funding for this scholarship award. Students must present a recommendation letter from one faculty member at BCCC. Faculty Senate as a body will choose the recipient from a list of those eligible. Deadlines to apply for Spring is October 15 annually. Deadline to apply for Fall is March 15 annually.

BCCC STAFF ASSOCIATION
Established in 1998, the scholarship is awarded to provide financial aid to BCCC students who are enrolled in a technical, vocational or college transfer program and is a resident of NC. Student must be enrolled full time and have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and show academic promise. Scholarships are selected by the association and awarded to students of a BCCC staff member.

BCCC TRUSTEE ENDOWMENT
Established in 1996 by the BCCC Board of Trustees to generate an annual scholarship, it is awarded to a full-time student enrolled in a curriculum program. The recipient must demonstrate financial need, leadership ability, and academic promise.

BCCC TRUSTEE SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1998 by the Board of Trustees is awarded to a full time student enrolled in a curriculum program. Recipient must be in good academic standing, show academic promise and demonstrate financial need. Students should have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

BEAU BENNETT MEMORIAL CULINARY SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2021 in loving memory of Beau Bennett, this scholarship will be awarded to a Culinary Arts student taking classes at BCCC. Beau Bennett was the son of Gerri McKinley, owner of Coldwell Banker Coastal Rivers. Beau was head chef of Beau’s Catering in Hillsborough, NC and was married to Lauren Bennett and he held close ties to his brother, Rain. This scholarship will assist a qualified student with tuition, fees or books.

BEAUFORT COUNTY CRIME STOPPERS LINLEY H. GIBBS, JR. SCHOLARSHIP
The Beaufort County Crime Stoppers Linley H. Gibbs, Jr. Scholarship is to commemorate the memory of founding and long-term member Linley Gibbs by providing a scholarship to excelling individuals that exemplify the same corresponding morals and principals. To honor Mr. Gibbs’ legacy, Beaufort County Crime Stoppers provides scholarships to students continuing their success in a law enforcement career.

BEAUFORT PROMISE
Established in 2019, this endowment will provide four semesters of guaranteed, paid tuition and fees at Beaufort County Community College for first-time college students who take 12 or more credits per semester and maintain a 2.5 GPA.

BELHAVEN TROUT TOURNAMENT AND FESTIVAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Belhaven Chamber of Commerce hosted the first annual Belhaven Trout Tournament and Festival (October, 2023) and established scholarships for students entering into a marine/boatbuilding program of study at Beaufort County Community College. Students must present a demonstrated financial need and have at least a 2.0 GPA to qualify. Students must reside in one of the four service regions of BCCC and/or the surrounding areas including Pitt, Pamlico, Martin, etc. This scholarship is for students in any aspect of marine industry including, but not limited to, owing & operating a marine detail business, boat building/manufacturing, Industrial Sewing Levels 1-2-3, BLET for Wildlife Officer, marine insurance, criminal justice for wildlife officers, etc. and any other programs authorized by the donor. Funds are also to be used for apprenticeships as needed by continuing education.

BILL AND AUDREY TALLEY ENDOWMENT
Ms. Audrey Talley worked for Grady White for over five years, Privateer for several years, and owned Swain Point Boats for about eight years. Mr. Bill Talley, (Mr. Nelson’s stepfather) was the production manager for Privateer, co-owner of Swain Point Boats, and the production manager for Parker Marine in Beaufort, NC for about eleven years before he was disabled. Ms. Talley always believed in education and never gave up on her dream by completing her bachelor’s degree at age 65.

BILL PRUITT/ST. THOMAS EPISCOPAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is to support a student who is a graduate of Northside High School and ineligible for a Pell Grant. The student must be in good standing with a minimum GPA 2.75. Preference is given to students entering two-year job ready programs that require an Associate Degree in Applied Science or appropriate certificate.

BLB ENDOWMENT
Established in 2006, this endowment was specifically designed to provide scholarships for students enrolled in an industrial arts program at BCCC. Recipients must have at least a 2.0 GPA and demonstrate need.

BOB AND DEBORAH MORLOCK NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2021 in honor of Bob and Deborah Morlock, this annual scholarship is to provide financial support to second-year nursing students who demonstrate high academic achievement and financial need. Beaufort County, Martin County or Hyde County must be the birthplace or the county of residence for the student selected. Mr. Morlock graduated from the BCCC Nursing program in 1980.

BOBBY ANDREWS ENDOWMENT
Established in 2000 in honor of Bobby Andrews and his long career in coaching women’s and girls’ softball, the scholarships are made available to women who have played in the Washington Girls’ Softball League, and are planning to attend BCCC.

BOBBY BRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2023, Mr. Bright is remembered for serving his country in the NC National Guard. He was a graduate of Chocowinity High School and in 1961, he married the love of his life, the former Marie Hill. He was a true outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and golf. He loved the art of woodworking and received satisfaction from seeing things he created himself. Scholarships will be awarded to students in the boat building/manufacturing program of study at BCCC.

BUNYAN RURITAN CLUB
Established in 1991, scholarships are awarded to students residing in BCCC service area who demonstrate financial need and strong academic promise. Scholarships are awarded annually for fall and spring semesters.

CAROL WATERS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in loving memory of Carol Waters in 2021, this scholarship is awarded to a BCCC nursing student with at least a 3.0 GPA and in good academic standing.

THE CHAPIN FOUNDATION
The Howard Chapin Family members have been recognized educators in the public schools of North Carolina. Most of their professional work has been in Beaufort County. Their son, Michael, has continued the tradition by providing workshops or “schools” for law enforcement officers. Financial assistance from The Chapin Foundation is a way of helping students who wish to continue their studies and fulfill their dreams for a four-year degree. Some of the benefits may be having more income, better living conditions, being active in the community, but above all else, there is personal satisfaction.

CHRIS MOFFITT ENDOWMENT
Established in 1999 by friends and family in memory of Chris Moffitt, RN, this fund makes an annual award to a student enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program. Chris Moffitt was a graduate of BCCC’s ADN program.

CHRIS RUNYAN
Established in 2021 in loving memory of Chris Runyon, this scholarship assists student in good academic standing with a demonstrated financial need with tuition, fees and books in curriculum and continuing education courses. Students must have and maintain a satisfactory GPA.

CLARENCE AND MILDRED HOLLOWELL ENDOWMENT
Clarence Hollowell, Jr. created this endowment to honor and memorialize his parents, Clarence and Mildred Hollowell. Mr. Hollowell, who died in 1979, was a native of Belhaven and a career Coast Guardsman. He and his wife, Mildred, raised six children in Belhaven. The scholarship assists BCCC nursing students who live in or near Belhaven.

COACH BILL LAKE ENDOWMENT
Established in 2018, this scholarship is in memory of beloved Coach William “Bill” Lake who began teaching business classes and coaching the girls’ basketball team for Northside High School in 2004. In 2006 he transferred to Southside High School where he taught business and coached the Lady Seahawks until retiring in 2015. He coached the Lady Seahawks to the 2012 A State Championship game where they finished State Runners Up. After retirement, he continued to support Seahawk Athletics and substitute teach at Southside. This scholarship is awarded to a Southside High School student attending BCCC.

COASTAL CAROLINA FORD CLUB
Established in 2014, scholarships are awarded to students seeking to enter the automotive industry. Applicants are awarded based on GPA, attendance, semester hours enrolled at the college and demonstrated financial need.

COCA COLA ENDOWMENT
Established in 2010 with a generous gift from the Coca Cola Foundation and Coca Cola Bottling Plant in Washington, NC, this endowment provides a scholarship for a BCCC student with at least a 2.5 GPA and is receiving no other financial aid. Thanks to this donation, the Coca Cola Bottling Plant will model good corporate citizenship in perpetuity.

COLIN CRATCH ARNOLD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in memory of Colin Cratch Arnold, this biannual scholarship is awarded to a young man or mature male student who demonstrates financial need. Colin was a student at BCCC.

THE COMMUNITY ENDOWMENT
The Community Endowment was started in 1997 and is comprised of donations to the college from annual solicitations and gifts at large. The earnings from this endowment provide funds for scholarships as well as special projects that benefit the College.

CORNELL MCGILL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2022, scholarships are awarded in memory of long-time Board of Trustee member, Mr. Cornell McGill. Scholarships are awarded to students with academic promise (2.0 or greater) and who demonstrate financial need. Scholarship preference is given to those in the nursing program who reside in the BCCC service area. Scholarships may also be awarded to students in any program of study who demonstrate financial need and academic promise.

CYPRESS LANDING ENDOWMENT
The homeowners in Cypress Landing subdivision joined forces in 2007 to create this first-of-its-kind endowment at Beaufort County Community College. Mrs. Helen Sommerkamp and Mr. Chris Harris lead the effort to organize the campaign and within a few months, this small community of 500 homes met a big goal of $10,000. This scholarship is awarded to a BCCC student residing in Beaufort County and who demonstrates need.

THE DARRAGH FOUNDATION
Established in 1998 by Richard and Mildred Darragh, the Darragh family focuses on the impact of education in the communities it serves. The Darragh Foundation’s mission is “Helping to Improve the Lives of Others.” Scholarships from the foundation are awarded to Continuing Education students seeking their high school equivalency diploma and students working towards an industry-recognized credential returning to the workforce. Scholarships are awarded biannually and students must show academic promise and demonstrate need.

DAVID AND TERRI ANN MCLAWHORN ENDOWMENT
Dr. David McLawhorn initiated this endowment in 2004. As president of BCCC from July of 2001 through May of 2012, Dr. McLawhorn wanted to create a fund that would supplement the work of the Foundation by providing scholarship to students who demonstrate need and academic promise.

DAVID CLARK ENDOWMENT
This endowment was established in 2011 by Trader Construction Company-New Bern, NC and Potash Corp-Aurora, NC in memory of David Clark. David was a Trader Construction Company superintendent with more than 30 years of industrial construction experience. He was an exemplary employee and excellent role model for his fellow co-workers. He was also a man of faith, community involvement, and a native of Beaufort County, NC. So it is appropriate, this endowment is made available to BCCC students in any of the Industrial Technology programs - Automotive Systems, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Heavy Equipment and Transport/Construction Equipment, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering/Drafting & Design, or Welding.

DAVID LEE, JR. SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2007, two scholarships are provided annually to assist students during the fall and spring semesters. One student will be selected from the automotive program and second student from the business program. Students must have and maintain a 2.5 GPA and must not receive any other financial assistance.

DAVID ROBSON ENDOWMENT
Established by friends and family in 2017, this endowment funds scholarships in memory of David. David had a lifelong passion for cars and worked in the automotive industry. Scholarships are awarded to qualified students in the automotive technology program.

DONALD AND JANET BELLEW ENDOWMENT
Donald Bellew and his wife Janet established this endowment in 2005. Bellew had obtained his higher education by putting himself through night school and wanted to make it easier for another night student to do the same. Hence, this scholarship is available for students enrolled in BCCC’s evening classes.

DOROTHY AND ALLEN TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIP
Sam Taylor established this scholarship in memory of his parents, Dorothy and Allen Taylor. Scholarships are given to second year nursing RN students who are Beaufort County natives who intent to stay and work in Beaufort County and plan to continue their education at an accredit university towards a BS degree. Students must demonstrate financial need.

DOUGLAS & LOU BRANCH TEACHING SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2022, this scholarship goes to a student seeking post-secondary education in teaching. Ms. Branch graduated from Chocowinity High School in 1961. Following high school, she worked various jobs then realizing the importance of an education started attending Beaufort County Community College until transferring to East Carolina University and graduating in 1974 with a Bachelors in Elementary Education and continued finishing with a Masters in 1984. She began her career with Beaufort County Schools at Chocowinity Primary School on November 1, 1974 and worked there her entire teaching career retiring June 2, 2003. She continued to work at CPS after retirement part time tutoring for several years. Scholarships are awarded to students showing academic promise needing assistance with tuition or textbooks.

DR. ADOLPHUS L. SPAIN ENDOWMENT
Eligible student(s) must be graduates of any public high school in Beaufort County, North Carolina with a preference given to graduates of Northside High School, with a demonstrated financial need. Students should be enrolled, or plan to enroll, in a program leading to a degree in teacher education.

DR. BARBARA AND TOM TANSEY ENDOWMENT
Established in 2016 by Dr. Barbara Tansey, the endowment funds scholarships to students who require financial assistance to attend BCCC where the student does not qualify for federal financial assistance to no fault of their own. Dr. Barbara Tansey served as the fifth college president and retired May, 2017.

DR. CHARLES O. BOYETTE ENDOWMENT (ESTATE)
Established in 2020, this endowment funds scholarship assistance for those students entering health related fields and needing assistance to pay for their education. Dr. Boyette served as the Beaufort County Community College Foundation Board Chair from 1985 to 2016. He had many professional and medical affiliations throughout his career and was admired and respected throughout the communities he served.

DR. GORDON HOFFMAN CRIMINAL JUSTICE ENDOWMENT
Created from the sale of land donated to the Foundation by Dr. Gordon Hoffman, this scholarship is awarded to a law enforcement officer seeking to further his or her education with a degree in criminal justice. Prior to his retirement in 2003, Dr. Hoffman was the Director of BCCC’s Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program.

DR. NANCY ALFORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2018 by the BCCC community in memory of instructor Joseph Alford’s mother, Dr. Nancy Alford, this scholarship provides educational opportunities for students demonstrating financial need. Dr. Nancy Boylan Alford was the owner and operator of Carriage House Psychological Associates in Roanoke Rapids. Dr. Alford and her husband Reverend John B. Alford Jr. spent 57 years together. The Alfords want to keep her memory alive and foster the students who feel a sense of purpose by helping others. Scholarships are made available, but not limited, to students in the fields such as psychology, sociology, human services technology, and nursing.

DR. THOMAS W. NICHOLSON ENDOWMENT
Established in 2014 by Dr. Nicholson’s family, scholarships are awarded to qualifying students pursuing degrees in the medical fields. Dr. Nicholson was a Washington physician with Pamlico Internal Medicine where he practiced for 34 years.

ELLEN EVERETT AND RAYMOND GENE SCHWARTZ SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to BCCC Continuing Education students who successfully complete an industry recognized credentialed course. Scholarships are also available to achieve high school equivalency certificate. Qualified students must show academic promise and demonstrated financial need.

ELLEN JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT
Established in 2013 by her parents Mildred and Frank Johnson, her brother Val, and numerous memorials, this endowment remembers Ellen Johnson’s generosity of time, spirit, and laughter, as well as her love of education. She taught for many years in Japan and was an assistant principal at Glen Hills HS in Augusta, GA when she passed away. Her scholarship is used to help BCCC students become teachers.

FLOYD LUPTON ENDOWMENT
Floyd Lupton worked tirelessly for 26 years as an aide to Congressman Walter B. Jones and for the betterment of northeastern North Carolina. Lupton was famous for getting things done on behalf of the late congressman. Partnership for the Sounds, a nonprofit agency dedicated to the nature and economic development of the region, used private donations and memorials to create this endowment and honor the man who was instrumental in establishing the organization. Scholarships are given to students who intend to pursue a career in the science field with emphasis on natural or environmental sciences and reside in Beaufort, Hyde or Tyrrell County. Students should be enrolled in an Associate of Science Program.

FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2015, this scholarship is awarded to Continuing Education students seeking an industry-recognized credential. Students must demonstrate financial need and meet qualifying guidelines.

FRANCES AND IRWIN HULBERT ENDOWMENT
Established in 1991, first to memorialize Harry and Lorraine Alvis - the parents of Frances Hulbert, this endowment was renamed in 2008 by the Hulbert children. Frances Hulbert served on the BCCC Foundation’s Board of Directors for many years and her husband Irwin was an Episcopalian minister. The Hulbert scholarships are awarded to nursing students who demonstrate financial need and are in good academic standing. Preference is given to students committed to working with geriatric patients in Beaufort County for a period of one year after graduation.

FRANCES M. AND WILLIAM “BILL” R. ROBERSON ENDOWMENT
Frances and Bill Roberson bequeathed this endowment to BCCC in their will. Not only was Bill Roberson an astute businessman but he was also an avid art collector. Frances was a talented musician and vocalist. Together, the Robersons left a lasting impression on their community. They asked that this funding be used to reflect their great love for the arts. Hence, this scholarship is made available to a student who, after completing their initial course work at BCCC, plans to go on to earn a fine arts or culinary degree.

FRANCES M. BARNES TRUST SCHOLARSHIP
Frances M. Barnes Trust scholarships are awarded to Martin County curriculum and continuing educations attending BCCC who intend to reside and work in Martin County upon course completion. Students must meet respective scholarship guidelines for the curriculum or continuing education program of study, show satisfactory academic progress and demonstrate financial need.

GEMS (GIRLS EXCITED ABOUT MATH AND SCIENCE)
Sandria McFadden was teaching drafting at Beaufort County Community College when she decided to create an endowment to provide scholarships for women pursuing careers in nontraditional fields – like machining, drafting, law enforcement, welding, etc. McFadden encouraged others to give and in June of 2008, GEMS reached endowment status. Thanks to McFadden’s vision, women attending BCCC can Believe! Achieve! Become!

GLENN AND COLONEL KATHY SIMPSON SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2018, this scholarship is awarded to a qualified and deserving student enrolled in a curriculum program that demonstrates academic promise and financial need. Students are required to have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and be enrolled a minimum of six credit hours.

GREY AND JARL BOWERS ENDOWMENT
Grey Worley and Jarl E. Bowers provided for this endowment in their wills. Grey Bowers was a home economics teacher and Jarl Bowers was a successful businessman and community leader. The Bowers believed deeply in the value of education as well as the mission of BCCC, and bequeathed this endowment in 2008 to help students demonstrating need and enrolled in a curriculum program at BCCC.

HANNAH PAGE ENDOWMENT
Family and friends established the Hannah Page Endowment in December 1999. She was a beloved faculty member in the BCCC Business Division. The endowment provides an annual scholarship to a medical office administration student.

HARRIETT AND ALBERT MISH GIFT
The estate of Albert and Harriett Mish, left a substantial gift of $200,000 to BCCC in 2012. Albert ran a sign painting business and Harriett was a homemaker. The Mish’s final wishes were to support the college in a significant way. Their gift will be used to enhance the programs, services, or facilities of Beaufort County Community College.

HELEN THORNE BROOKS BOYD ENDOWMENT
Established in 1997 by family and friends in memory of Helen Boyd, a former BCCC Trustee and Foundation board member, this scholarship is restricted to a full-time student enrolled in an associate degree program, who has financial need, is in good academic standing, and is a resident of the Bath or Belhaven township.

HOPE FUND ENDOWMENT
Established in 2016 in memory of Erin Chambers Pierce, this endowment funds scholarships to ADN students.Ms. Pierce graduated from BCCC with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing, May 2014.Students must be in good standing and show a strong desire to serve others and demonstrate financial need.

JAMES WYATT RESPASS BLANKS ENDOWMENT
Established in 2005 with memorials and gifts from friends and family, the “Wyatt” Blanks scholarship is awarded annually to a student with at least a 2.5 GPA. His parents Loretta and Wayne Blanks, Sr. wanted to assist students who are working toward a 2 year degree.

JAMES FRANKLIN AND HANNAH ROBERSON BAGWELL ENDOWMENT
Established in 1997, this endowment funds annual scholarships in memory of William Riley and Rosa Watson Roberson and William “Bill” Roberson Bagwell. The recipients of these awards must be high school or GED graduates enrolled in a degree, diploma, or certificate program, must demonstrate financial need, and must show academic promise.

JAMES “JIM” BLANTON ENDOWMENT
Established in 2012 by his wife Betty Blanton, this endowment memorializes Jim’s 22 years as an instructor and president of BCCC. To reflect her husband’s love of science, as well as the campus he worked so hard to build, this endowment’s scholarships will assist BCCC students in pursuit of science degrees.

J. BONNER PAUL, SR. ENDOWMENT
J. Bonner Paul’s wife Lillian, and Bobby Hodges, vice president of Paul Funeral Home, created this endowment on November 23, 2008 to memorialize his successful career and numerous civic contributions to Beaufort County. Mr. Paul joined his family’s mortuary business in 1937 and shaped it into a company synonymous with compassion and service. He was active in numerous civic, church, and professional organizations throughout his life. The scholarship provided by this endowment is awarded annually to a business or nursing student attending BCCC.

JAMES (JIM) CHESNUTT ENDOWMENT
Established by Jim Chesnutt, a longtime member of the Board of Trustees for BCCC, this endowment was established to award scholarships to a rising sophomore seeking to transfer, on completion of Associates Degree, to East Carolina University and enroll in degree program offered by College of Business, College of Business Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship. Qualifying factors include GPA, attendance and leadership.

JAMES E. AND EVELYN SMITH, III ENDOWMENT
Despite James Smith’s blindness throughout most of his adult life, he and his wife Evelyn owned and operated their own successful accounting business for 29 years. Hence, in 2007, the Smith’s daughter Mandy S. Jones, established this endowment to commemorate her parents’ lifelong love of learning and to honor their positive attitude toward life. This endowment provides an annual scholarship for a student demonstrating financial need and academic promise.

JEFFREY BROCK TUBAUGH ENDOWMENT
Established in 2022 in loving memory of Jeffrey Brock Tubaugh by his family, scholarships are awarded first to a student is a cancer patient or a cancer survivor, or who has a parent, grandparent, or sibling who has had cancer or who has died of cancer. Preference is to a Beaufort County student who is in good academic standing.

JESSE KING SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2023 in loving memory of Jesse King, this scholarship is given to BCCC student in the programs of BLET (preference) or business administration. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA, good character and show academic promise. Students must also write an essay “Why I deserve this scholarship?” to be considered for this award. Students should reach out to the Foundation office for annual deadlines. The scholarship will be implemented in Spring 2024.

JODY PARRISH ENDOWMENT
Margaret “Margie” Holder established this endowment in 2012 to memorialize her beloved son Jody. Margie was also an early childhood instructor at BCCC, and during her tenure, raised funds to help several BCCC students.

JOHN AND DOROTHY “DOT” TANKARD ENDOWMENT
Established in 2013 with cumulative proceeds from the BCCC Foundation’s annual Cutthroat Croquet Tournament and great support from the entire Tankard family, this endowment was created to memorialize John and Dorothy “Dot” Tankard – lifelong residents and leaders of Bath, NC. John was a BCCC Trustee and founding member of the outdoor drama “Blackbeard: Knight of the Black Flag.” Dot was the director of the Historic Bath Site as well as the first woman to direct a state historic site. These scholarships will assist BCCC students residing in the area of Bath.

JOHN AND GENEVA MORGAN ENDOWMENT
Established in 2016 by the Beaufort County Mental Health Association, the scholarship represents the tireless efforts of John and Geneva Morgan as they advocated for citizens affected by mental illness. Geneva Morgan’s nursing career spanned 40 years of service providing care to the pediatric population of the community.In addition to administering to the needs of the pediatric patient, she focused upon alleviating the stigma associated with mental illness.It was the care, compassion and wellbeing for the often forgotten patient that gave her the most joy. John became her partner in advocacy after retirement. John and Geneva Morgan through their life’s work have modeled civic responsibility and community engagement that others should aspire to emulate. Scholarships are provided to senior level nursing students with a minimum GPA of 2.5.Student must be a Beaufort County resident and participate in community events honoring the Morgan legacy of community involvement.

JOHN AND LUCILLE KELTNER SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2023 in loving memory of John and Lucille Keltner, this scholarship is awarded to students who show a demonstrated financial need and academic promise. Scholarships will assist with tuition and textbooks. Students should be enrolled in the BCCC service region.

KIMBERLY ANNE AND DAVID TEETER ENDOWMENT
Established in 1994 in memory of Kimberly Anne Teeter, and expanded in 2009 to include David, the daughter and son of Ruth and Vernon Teeter, this scholarship is awarded annually to a student enrolled in the college transfer curriculum and is in good academic standing. Preference is given to the child of a BCCC faculty or staff member.

LANE ENDOWMENT
Established in 1998 in memory of Harold Alton Lane, Jr., and in honor of Constance Lane Howard, by their parents Harold Lane, Sr. and his wife Louise, this endowment provides annual scholarships to one or more students in the nursing and or an associate degree program.

LARRY LANCASTER ENDOWMENT
Linda Lancaster established this endowment in 2012 to memorialize her husband and his many years as the owner of Larry’s Body Shop in Washington, NC. Her desire was to assist BCCC automotive students in using their God-given mechanical talent to do something they love to do - like her husband Larry - repair and restore vehicles.

LARRY T. MOORE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2014 in memory of Larry T. Moore, Carver Machine Works provides scholarships for students enrolled in the mechanical engineering technology program. Mr. Moore was a skilled machinist and quality insurance inspector for many years. To qualify for this scholarship, students must show academic promise and demonstrate financial need.

LEVI “SCOTT” MCGOWAN NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2018, this scholarship is to provide financial support to an academically capable, second year nursing student demonstrating financial need. Beaufort County must be the birthplace or county of residence for the student selected. This scholarship is to assist with tuition.

LINDA LOUISE PENROD ENDOWMENT
Established in memory of Linda L. Penrod, the endowment funds scholarships for nursing students who have completed one semester and have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Students must demonstrate financial need.

LOIS STILES LOOPE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Lois Stiles Loope Memorial Scholarship honors the mother of Dr. David Loope, sixth president of Beaufort County Community College. Mrs. Loope worked as a registered nurse for 38 years, and the scholarship in her name assists first-generation college students who enroll in either credit or non-credit health care programs. The scholarship assists student with textbooks and tuition for college.

LOU TYER MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT
The Lou Tyer Memorial Endowment was established in 2000. Tyer was a beloved developmental math instructor at BCCC. The scholarship is generally awarded to a successful developmental education student working toward a degree.

LOUISE AND DORSEY WELCH ENDOWMENT
Established in 2001, the Welch scholarship memorializes a couple who made lifelong contributions to the community through their family business, Welch’s Drugstore. Louise Welch was also a teacher. This scholarship is made available annually to a student who, after completing their initial course work at BCCC, plans to go on to earn a teaching degree. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA to be eligible for this scholarship.

LOUISE P. KIDWELL ENDOWMENT
Louise Proctor Kidwell’s children, Ronald, Mark, Proctor, Mary Lou, and Keith started this endowment in 2008 to memorialize their mother’s accomplishments. She worked as an accountant in NYC for 17 years before joining H&R Block. In 1976 she passed the IRS Enrolled Agent exam and in 1979 purchased the Washington NC H&R Block franchise and opened LPK Accounting Service. She worked in both of these businesses until her death. Kidwell was a role model for women in the business world and continues to be so through this perpetual scholarship for BCCC business or accounting students.

LOUISE R. LESTER FOUNDATION
Founded in 2001, the Louise R. Lester Foundation builds on the charitable works of Mrs. Louise Robertson Lester. Mrs. Lester was a native of Martinsville, Va., and attended Bentley Business College, Gassaway Business College, and, later in life, Patrick Henry Community College and Averett College. She studied interior design, architecture and art. She was an accomplished artist, producing beautiful paintings, and a collection of her poetry has been published under the title of her life’s motto, “Life, Love and Laughter.” The Louise R. Lester Foundation seeks to effect positive change in the communities and lives of the people who are served through its philanthropic support. They seek to build effective relationships with grantees through close communication and a willingness to understand the challenges they face. Scholarships are available for students facing financial challenges to continue their college education.

LOUISE TERRY ENDOWMENT
In celebration and memory of her sister’s long and successful business career, Linda Lancaster established the Louise Terry Endowment in 2012.Preference is given to students in business administration and second consideration to BLET and criminal justice students. Students must demonstrate need and academic promise.

LUCILLE EDWARDS CAROWAN DIBBLE ENDOWMENT
Lucille Edwards Carowan Dibble was memorialized after her death in November 2006 by her husband of two and a half years, Louis Dibble, and her daughters Gladys, Martha, Mary, and Clarissa. Lucille Carowan Dibble chaired both a bond issuance committee and a College Parallel committee for BCCC. She worked in education and served on the Washington City Board of Education. Her scholarship assists students in the Industrial Technology.

LUCY W. BURGESS ENDOWMENT
Established in 1996 as a memorial to Lucy W. Burgess, a former resident of Beaufort County and long-term employee of the NC Department of Social Services, this annual scholarship is awarded to a student receiving assistance or services from the Department of Social Services. The recipient must have some work experience, be committed to getting an education, have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, and may be enrolled in any program with the exception of cosmetology.

LYNDA E. LANE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2023, the purpose of this scholarship is to encourage visual and performing arts which create new ways of looking at the world. Music, drama, theater, dance, visual and media arts are associated with cognitive, social, and behavioral outcomes in individuals across their lifespan. They can result in appreciation and acceptance of a diversity of attributes, lifestyles, and the many aspects of the world around us. Scholarships are to be used for supplies, materials, technology & other art related materials. Students must be enrolled in an arts program and scholarships may also be used for tuition, fees and books.

MARGARET HODGES HACKNEY ENDOWMENT
Established in 2005 in memory of Margaret Hodges Hackney, this endowment makes permanent Mrs. Hackney's long-time annually funded scholarship in memory of her father, Ralph H. Hodges. Both spent a lifetime in community service, with a special interest in education. The endowment makes awards to BCCC nursing students, with priority given to students in the Practical Nursing program who demonstrate financial need and academic merit.

MARIE R. ROBINSON SCHOLARSHIP
The Marie R. Robinson Scholarship is for a deserving student in the BCCC Nursing Program. Ms. Robinson, born 1922, was a lifelong resident of Washington, N.C. who graduated from the Tayloe Hospital School of Nursing in Washington and was a Registered Nurse for Beaufort County Hospital until her retirement. She was devoted to her family, her many friends and her nursing colleagues. Her mission was to serve others.

MARTHA'S THRIFT STORE SCHOLORSHIP
To establish a scholarship for curriculum education and/or continuing education students who have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and a demonstrated financial need. Students must reside in the BCCC service area, specifically in the eastern parts of Bath, Belhaven, Pantego and upper Hyde County. Students must be enrolled in a program of study that “helps people” including but not limited to human services, nursing, psychology, medical laboratory technology, culinary, medical office administration, practical nursing, registered medical assistant, pharmacy technician, phlebotomy, nurse aide, EKG Technician, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, Community Paramedicine, or Income Maintenance Caseworker. Students are also invited to volunteer at the thrift store/food pantry of Martha’s mission when available.

MYRTLE CUTLER JONES ENDOWMENT
Established in 2002 by the family of Myrtle Cutler Jones, this fund provides an annual scholarship to a second year BCCC student in a medical technology program. Jones, a Beaufort County native, recognized the importance of a medical facility in a rural community. She wanted her estate to benefit students in the medical field. Recipients must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

ODEN FAMILY ENDOWMENT
The Oden Family has been in the Hunter’s Bridge area for multiple generations totaling hundreds of years. This scholarship was established in honor of the family, but particularly to honor the memory of Mrs. Vera Oden, and John Henry Oden III. Ms. Oden taught at Bath Elementary for over 30 years and was a great advocate for education and mental health. John H. Oden III had a deep passion for genealogy and a very active and creative mind. He served as President of the North Carolina Genealogical Association and did fundamental research in the history surrounding Blackbeard the Pirate and his relationship to Beaufort County.

REID SASNETT ENDOWMENT
Established in 2015 by Paul and Amy Sasnett in memory of their son Reid, this endowment funds annual scholarships to provide educational opportunities for students demonstrating financial need. Reid was a sophomore at Pungo Christian Academy of Belhaven where he was a member of their FFA Chapter. He was also a member of Pinetown Volunteer Fire Department, BoCo Archery and the Carolina Truck Game. He was proud to be a member of the "Sasnett farming team." The Sasnett family wants to keep Reid’s memory alive and foster the growth of several programs that were special to him. Scholarships are made available to students in the agricultural program, fire & rescue training and emergency medical services.

RITA B. TOLER ENDOWMENT
Established in 2003, by her husband Gary and daughter Kelly T. Harding, in memory of Rita B. Toler, this scholarship for accounting students honors Toler’s 32-year career in the BCCC Business office. Toler retired from her college Controller position in 2003 and is fondly remembered for her commitment to accuracy and integrity in accounting. Her wish was to pass this on to others. Scholarships are given to students with a GPA of 3.0 or greater who plan on continuing to a 4-year university with a concentration in accounting.

ROBERT “BOBBY” E. FARISH MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT
Rebecca Farish established this endowment in 2005 to honor the memory of her husband with scholarships that are reflective of his talents and interests in life. The scholarships are awarded to students in the business, criminal justice or automotive technology programs each year, and are based on need.

ROBERT BROWNING AND ROWENA HOLLOWELL CLAYTON
Established in 2021 by Reverend Robert Burns Cayton and wife, Debra Rose, and Darrell Cayton, Sr. and wife, Peggy, and Carl Cayton, Sr, and wife, Annette, this scholarship is in loving memory of Robert Browning and Rowena Hollowell Cayton. The scholarship is awarded to an agricultural degree seeking student of Beaufort County Community College who shows demonstrated financial need and academic promise. The student must exhibit and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA to qualify for this scholarship.

ROBERT C. PAGE ENDOWMENT
Established by Lena H. Page, RN in 1992 in memory of her husband, this annual scholarship is awarded to a nursing student who demonstrates high academic achievement and financial need. Mrs. Page graduated from the BCCC Nursing program in 1968.

ROD CANTRELL
This scholarship is awarded to students in good academic standing with a demonstrated, emergency need for tuition, fees or books. Students must be enrolled in curriculum classes and have a satisfactory GPA.

SHEREDA BAILEY ENDOWMENT
Shereda Bailey was a promising young BCCC nursing student who died unexpectedly in 2006 - just three weeks before graduation. Shereda’s mother, Sheila Rogers, combined memorials raised by Shereda’s fellow nursing students, and funds raised by family and friends, to start an endowment in her beloved daughter’s memory. The scholarship is awarded to deserving nursing students under the age of twenty-five.

SOUTHERN BANK ENDOWMENT

The Southern Bank offices in Beaufort County established this endowment to provide scholarships to Beaufort County Community College students residing in the areas of Belhaven, Bath, Pinetown, Pantego and all of Hyde County.

STATE EMPLOYEES CREDIT UNION (SECU)
Scholarships are awarded to students who best exemplify the membership philosophy of credit unions, “People Helping People,” and have demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement. Preference will be given to students whose parents or guardians and family members are public sector employees who live and work in North Carolina. Students must have a GPA of 2.5 of higher and be enrolled in an associate degree, diploma or certificate program.

STEPHANIE ZABLOCKI JONES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Stephanie Zablocki Jones Memorial Scholarship provides financial support for Beaufort County Community College (BCCC) students in the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program, or other medical programs. Stephanie was a graduate of the BCCC MLT program and was a phlebotomist at the Leo G. Jenkins Cancer Center in Greenville, NC. She was lost from our family and community in 2006 while administering first aid at an accident scene on River Road near her home in Washington, NC. Stephanie love the Washington community. She was the mother of three, a volunteer youth sports coach, and assistant Scoutmaster at Troop 99 in Washington. We hope this scholarship assistance will help others model Stephanie’s academic achievement and community service; helping others with great skill, compassion and dedication.

SUE BROOKSHIRE ENDOWMENT
Established in 2012 by long-time and beloved BCCC Guidance Counselor Sue Brookshire, this endowment celebrates the many students she helped along the way and fulfills her desire to assist future BCCC students in overcoming adversity through attaining their education goals.

TAYLOE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT
Mrs. Sam Tim (Tay) Carter, with encouragement from her children Libba, Lou, Clay, and Mary, started the Tayloe Family Endowment in 2003, in memory of her grandfather, Dr. David Thomas Tayloe. The endowment also honors his numerous descendants who have made significant contributions to the medical community of Beaufort County. Scholarships generated by this endowment are awarded to BCCC students enrolled in any medically related program.

TED CLAYTON WELDING ENDOWMENT
Initiated with prize money from being named the NCCCS Faculty Member of the Year in 2005, the Ted Clayton Welding Endowment was established in 2013. The earnings from this endowment are to be used to enhance the welding program at BCCC or to provide a welding scholarship to a student in the welding program.

THOMAS E. MINGES MEMORIAL/PEPSI SCHOLARSHIP
Two scholarships are provided annually to qualified students who are enrolled full time and a resident of a qualifying county. Recipients may also be high school students entering college in the fall semester. Students must exhibit academic achievement with a GPA average of 3.0 or better and special awards, job experiences and community activities are considered for final award.

TRICOUNTY TELEPHONE FOUNDATION
Established in 1994, scholarships are awarded to adult students returning to college. Recipients must be enrolled in an associate degree program and demonstrate financial need.

VIDANT BEAUFORT HEALTH
Established in 2018, this scholarship is awarded to qualified students in nursing, MLT, nursing assistant, phlebotomy, or any other medically related program of study. Scholarships may be awarded to curriculum and continuing education students.

WALLACE / EAKES ENDOWMENT
Doris Wallace Eakes, originally from Beaufort County, started this endowment to memorialize her father, Carmer Wallace, and her husband Joseph Eakes. Doris and her husband owned numerous nursing homes and shared a passion for good nursing care. Thus, the proceeds from this endowment support nursing scholarships.

Washington -Beaufort County Board of Realtors
This scholarship was established to support a student in good academic standing with a demonstrated financial need pursuing an education in a construction trade such as HVAC, plumbing or electrical. The scholarship will assist with tuition, fees or books at the college.

WASHINGTON BUSINESS & CAREER WOMEN SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarships are awarded to a mature woman reentering the work force. Students must provide information on community activities and demonstrate academic promise and financial need.

WASHINGTON ROTARY CLUB
Established in 1994, scholarships are awarded annually to BCCC students who have academic promise and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to students who have a tie to the Rotary organization and exhibit service to the community.

WASHINGTON WOMAN’S CLUB ENDOWMENT
The Washington Woman’s Club established this fund in 1999. It provides an annual scholarship to a second year nursing student residing in Beaufort County. Recipients must have a 3.5 GPA and be willing to work in Beaufort County for one year after they graduate from the nursing program.

WOODMEN LIFE 623 WASHINGTON
Established in 2016, Woodmen Life scholarships are awarded to students residing in Beaufort County who demonstrate financial need and strong academic promise. Scholarships are awarded annually for fall and spring semesters.

ZENO WESTLEY KING SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 2019 and in memory of Zeno Westley King, a former trustee of Beaufort County Community College, this scholarship is awarded to an African American technical career student that demonstrates a desire to excel in their chosen field by possessing at least at 2.5 GPA.
