BCCC Foundation announces more scholarship recipients, applications available for spring

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients for the Fall 2020 semester. Students can still sign up for 8-week classes starting October 15. The BCCC Foundation is currently raising funds through an online auction to support scholarships. Students can apply now for Spring 2021 scholarships.

Jessica Chadwick, 30, received the Allen & Dorothy Taylor Nursing Scholarship. The Winterville resident is working toward her Associate Degree in Nursing. She attended South Central High School and holds a Practical Nursing Degree from BCCC. She plans to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Sam Taylor established this scholarship in memory of his parents, Dorothy and Allen Taylor. Scholarships are given to second year nursing RN students who are Beaufort County natives who intent to stay and work in Beaufort County and plan to continue their education at an accredited university towards a BS degree. Students must demonstrate financial need.

Loren Cherry, 23, received the Bill Pruitt/St. Thomas Episcopal Church Scholarship. The Washington resident is working toward an Associate in Applied Science in Business Administration. She attended Northside High School, and she plans to help better her family-owned business and start her own business one day. Cherry currently works at Custom Carpentry, LLC. She is the daughter of Lee Cherry Jr. and the late Neva Pridgen Cherry.

The Bill Pruitt/St. Thomas Episcopal Church is to support a student who is a graduate of Northside High School and ineligible for a Pell Grant. The student must be in good standing with a minimum GPA 2.75. Preference is given to students entering two-year job ready programs that require an Associate in Applied Science or appropriate certificate.

Alexia Clark, 18, received the Sue Brookshire Scholarship. The Bath resident is working toward her Associate in Arts. She attended Northside High School, and she is the daughter of Tina and Charles Clark of Bath. She plans to work as an ultrasound technician.

Established in 2012 by long-time and beloved BCCC Guidance Counselor Sue Brookshire, this endowment celebrates the many students she helped along the way and fulfills her desire to assist future BCCC students in overcoming adversity through attaining their education goals.

Jacob Edwards, 24, received the Dr. Adolphus L. Spain Scholarship. The Chocowinity resident is working toward his Associate in Arts. Edwards attended Southside High School and plans to attend East Carolina University. He is the son of John and Shelia Edwards of Chocowinity, and currently works as a substitute teacher for Beaufort County Schools.

Eligible student(s) must be graduates of any public high school in Beaufort County, North Carolina with a preference given to graduates of Northside High School, with a demonstrated financial need. Students should be enrolled, or plan to enroll, in a program leading to a degree in teacher education.

Makayla Hardy, 17, received the WoodmenLife 623 Washington Scholarship. The Washington resident is working toward her Associate in Early Childhood Education. She is the daughter of John and Melissa Hardy of Washington and currently works at Food Lion as a cashier. Hardy plans earn a degree in early education.

Established in 2016, WoodmenLife scholarships are awarded to students residing in Beaufort County who demonstrate financial need and strong academic promise. Scholarships are awarded annually for fall and spring semesters.

Briana Laws, 26, received the Dr. Tom Nicholson and the Marie R. Robinson Scholarships. The Washington resident is working on her Associate Degree in Nursing. Laws attended Washington High School and holds a Bachelor of Social Work. She plans to become a travel nurse. She is a mother of one and currently works at Brookdale Senior Living.

Established in 2014 by Dr. Nicholson’s family, scholarships are awarded to qualifying students pursuing degrees in the medical fields. Dr. Nicholson was a Washington physician with Pamlico Internal Medicine where he practiced for 34 years.

The Marie R. Robinson Scholarship is for a deserving student in the BCCC Nursing Program. Ms. Robinson, born 1922, was a lifelong resident of Washington, N.C. who graduated from the Tayloe Hospital School of Nursing in Washington and was a Registered Nurse for Beaufort County Hospital until her retirement. She was devoted to her family, her many friends and her nursing colleagues. Her mission was to serve others.

Lakelia Smith, 39, received the Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarship. The New Bern resident is working toward her Associate Degree in Nursing. The mother of four is the daughter of Michelle Boomer of Bayboro and Kenny Smith of Ernul. She attended Pamlico County High School, holds certifications in Nurse Aide I and Nurse Aide II, and plans to work as a registered nurse. Smith currently works as a patient care technician at Carolina East Medical Center.

Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing a career in the medical field. Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy is now known as O’Neal’s Pharmacy. Qualifying students will have a 2.5 GPA or greater and must be a resident of Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell or Washington County. Student must demonstrate financial need.

Kendall Watkins, 20, received the Bill Pruitt/St. Thomas Episcopal Church Scholarship. The Washington resident is part of the nursing program and the Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) program. Watkins attended Washington High School, and she plans to continue on to the nurse practitioner program at East Carolina University, with the intent of becoming a labor & delivery nurse.
