BCCC Library Hosts Talk on Greece

The Louise R. Lester Foundation Library at Beaufort County Community College will host communications professor Ben Deck on December 5 as part of its Community Voices program. Do you like gyros or baklava? Are you a fan of wrestling, or maybe debate club is more your speed? Do you cheer on Team USA during the Olympics? You might not know it, but all these things can be traced back to Greece. Deck will speak about life in Greece and discuss the many ways that Greek history and culture has influenced the United States. This presentation is part of the Beaufort Abroad: Crossing Boundaries, Expanding Community series. The presentation takes place from 6:00-7:00 p.m., and participants can try Greek foods.

Deck grew up in a military family and lived in several places. During his childhood in the early 1970s, he lived just outside Athens, Greece, for nearly two years. Deck is a communication professor for Beaufort CCC, and in a previous career he worked as a newspaper journalist for a variety of papers in Georgia and North Carolina. As an educator, he has also taught high school.

The Community Voices Series serves as a bridge connecting the Community College with the community at large to build engagement and interaction between businesses and individuals by offering exposure to the library and campus faculty and staff. The Beaufort Abroad series will feature BCCC employees’ global travels in connection with the Study Abroad program which will visit Austria, Germany, and Switzerland in 2024.
