Gamma Beta Phi Inducts New Members, Gives Back to Community

Some students will have special cords draped around their necks this week as they graduate. The cords show their dedication to community and academics through their participation in Gamma Beta Phi, the honor society at Beaufort County Community College. The group inducted new members into its organization on April 11. Members have to be presently enrolled at BCCC and must be committed to excellence in education, to good character and to service. They must have completed 12 or more semester hours of college work and pay the one-time national membership fee of $60.00 along with local dues of $8.00 per semester. Members cannot have their grades drop below a GPA of 3.2. They cannot be absent from 2 regular meetings without justifiable excuse.

The group has conducted multiple highway cleanups on Highway 264, raised hundreds of dollars for the Beaufort County Humane Society through their "Stocking Full of Treats for the Pups and Cats from the Streets" effort and held their first annual Jambalaya Fest to raise money for local charities, according to Dr. Keith Lyon, the faculty advisor for the group. The Jambalaya Fest brought in over $500. They secured scholarships for a number of transfer students, increased awareness of college and university programs and transfer opportunities and held a new Annual Year-End Intellectual but Fun Movie and Wings Night where they screened and discussed the historical movie Hidden Figures.

The new inductees were: Emily Alligood, Brayan Alvarez, Vanessa Barron, Shieka Benthall, Aubrey Bird, Taylor Carawan, Andrew Cartee, Amelia Chrismon, Celeste Clement, Kayleigh Cobb, Savannah Connell, Courtney Cratch, Sasha Elliott, Brittany Fennell, Cristal Gachuz-Sandoval, Lisa Greene, Kortney Hardy, Garrick Hartley, Brandy Holliday, Katelyn Kornegay, Amy Manning, Sydney Moore, Stephanie Ponce, Daniela Sebastian, Tasha Spencer, Atyana Starkie, Darian Stoica, and Timothy Sutton.
