BCCC Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

To support National Hispanic Heritage Month, Beaufort County Community College TRIO/Student Support Services offered a number of opportunities to celebrate. National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15. It is a special time to celebrate the culture, heritage and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

TRIO staff, students and family members began the celebration by attending the 5th Annual Latino Festival on Saturday, October 7 in Greenville, N.C.They enjoyed the food, music, games, information shared and, of course, the “freebies”.

On campus, BCCC students, staff and faculty joined TRIO in the student lounge on October 13, for salsa and chips. Jose Mendoza, BCCC Spanish instructor, shared information and debunked a few myths about the Hispanic and Latino cultures. His discussion included information about the diversity of cultures in Latino and Hispanic people, the strong sense of family, the trust in faith, the work ethic and the collective feeling to help the community. Mendoza also shared that although the common language is Spanish, there are many dialects.

The number of Hispanic and Latino students at BCCC is rising. Mendoza shared that education is considered a way to reach the “American Dream”.
