Pig Pickin’, Organic Gardening, Fitness Classes in February

Learn to cook a pig, get your garden started, check out the opera and make some candles.These classes are available through Beaufort County Community College’s Continuing Education Division. The Whole Hog

This class is going to roast a pig - nose to tail and everything in between. To learn this traditional skill from the members of the Pinetown Volunteer Fire Department is a never-before offered opportunity. Attendants of barbeque fundraisers will know how delicious charcoal-cooked pig can be. Many thanks to the Pinetown VFD for helping to stage this class.

On Thursday, February 15 from 6-8:00 p.m., the class leaders will explain the process they use to cook on campus. On Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m., February 17 the class will meet at the firehouse. Students will help cook the pig and all the fixins’. At 5:00 p.m., participants will hold a pig pickin’, and each student may invite one guest to join in. Instructive, delicious, and fun! The menu includes roasted whole pig, homemade slaw, pig pickin’ potatoes, hush puppies and traditional desserts. The fee for the class is $50.

Organic Gardening

Students will enjoy their garden more when they know it is a safe and environmentally friendly place. This Organic Gardening class will focus on sustainable growing methods for both vegetable and ornamental gardens. Billy Ray Askew, agriculture technology instructor at BCCC, will lead students to a new understanding of soil health and nutrition. They will learn about composting, mulching, growing cover crops, managing pests, making square-foot gardens and making hay bale gardens. Billy Ray will lead the class to start vegetables and ornamentals from seed in our greenhouse.

Participants will finish the class with plants to take home for their own gardens. For spring 2018, there are three additional sessions. Judy Keohane of Beaufort County Master Gardeners will lead a workshop on the importance of pollinators and how to encourage them. Bill Booth will help students create a bucket garden to carry home. Clay Carter will spend an evening focused on vegetative propagation at home and organic rose care.

This $55 class will take place on Thursdays from 6:00-8:00 p.m. starting February 8.

A Custom Fitness Plan for You

BCCC’s Health and Fitness Instructor, Ron Baldwin, will lead students through six weeks of gentle, supervised activities in a comfortable, new exercise lab. During these sessions, students will develop their own exercise and fitness plan that can easily be replicated at home. The class will use straps, exercise balls, gravity assisted exercises, light resistance training, inversion therapy, upper body ergometer and cardio training to help students develop regular exercise habits. Designed to help improve and maintain physical health and wellbeing, it takes place in a safe, guided and professional environment. While on campus, students are encouraged to get involved in our Beau-Fitt Program.

This class will take place from 9:00-10:00 a.m. on Wednesdays from February 21-March 28, and it will cost $35.00.

As students participate in discussions on Blackboard, a student born and raised in Beaufort County may be replying to comments typed time zones away. No matter where they originate, both students have decided they belong at BCCC.

Opera Excursion: La Boheme

Puccini’s La Boheme is the most performed opera in the world, and for good reason. It has memorable melodies, soaring arias, charming supporting roles and a love story that is beautifully tragic. The musical Rent and the movies Moulin Rouge and Moonstruck all take inspiration from this timeless opera.

The Metropolitan Opera’s production by Franco Zefferelli is a must-see. On Thursday, February 22 at 6:00 p.m., Jeff Phipps, retired member of ECU’s Theater Department, will lead an exploration of this opera. His lecture will make the experience much richer. On Saturday February 24, the class will travel to The Greenville Grand to see the Metropolitan Opera’s Live HD broadcast of La Boheme. The price ($65) includes lecture, transportation, and ticket to La Boheme.

Candle Making

Tameka Tyner enjoys making candles, and she will share her skills with you. The class now includes four sessions so that students can learn to make more kinds of candles. Students will make paraffin, soy and beeswax candles to enjoy in at home. Tea lights, tapers, pillar candles, blended wax candles and ice candles are all part of the class. All the supplies will be provided.

This class runs from 6:00-8:30 p.m. on Thursdays starting March 1. It costs $65.
