BCCC Foundation Announces Scholarship Recipients

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients for the spring 2019 semester. The BCCC Foundation has awarded over $145,000 in scholarships during the 2018-2019 academic year.

Jamie Davenport, 19, received the Vidant Beaufort Health Scholarship. The Farmville resident is working toward an Associate Degree in Nursing. The daughter of Bob and Caroline Davenport of Farmville, she attended Farmville Central High School. This scholarship is available to qualified students in nursing, MLT, nursing assistant, phlebotomy and any other curriculum or continuing education medical-related field, and who reside in BCCC’s service area.

Riley Davis, 19, received the Beaufort County Crimestoppers Linley H. Gibbs Jr. Scholarship. Davis is part of the criminal justice program. The Washington resident attended Washington High School and plans to work in law enforcement. The son of Jimmy and Leisa Davis, he currently works at Vidant Beaufort Hospital as a radiology transporter. The Beaufort County Crimestoppers Linley H. Gibbs, Jr. Scholarship commemorates the memory of founding and long-term member Linley Gibbs by providing a scholarship to excelling individuals that exemplify the same corresponding morals and principals. To honor Mr. Gibbs’ legacy, Beaufort County Crimestoppers provides scholarships to students continuing their success in a law enforcement career.

Breanna Ethridge, 17, received the Doris Eakes Scholarship. She is the daughter of Michelle and Dave Ethridge of Farmville and is part of the Associate Degree in Nursing program through the Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nursing (RIBN) program. Ethridge attended Farmville Central High School, plans to work in emergency medicine, and she is certified as an emergency medical technician (EMT). She currently works at Rock Springs Center as part of the kitchen staff. Doris Wallace Eakes, originally from Beaufort County, started this endowment to memorialize her father, Carmer Wallace, and her husband Joseph Eakes. Doris and her husband owned numerous nursing homes and shared a passion for good nursing care. Thus, the proceeds from this endowment support nursing scholarships.

Johnathon Midgette, 18, received the Washington Noon Rotary Scholarship. He is the son of Connie and Daniel Midgette of Pantego, and he working toward an Associate in Arts. The Pantego resident attended Pungo Christian Academy. He plans to transfer to East Carolina University to earn a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Established in 1994, Washington Noon Rotary Scholarships are awarded annually to BCCC students who have academic promise and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to students who have a tie to the Rotary organization and exhibit service to the community.

Sara Nicholson, 19, received the Louise R. Lester Foundation Scholarship. Nicholson is part of the nursing program. She is the daughter of Sharon and Lee Nicholson of Winterville, and she attended D.H. Connelly High School. She currently works at the Vidant Wellness Center in Greenville as a service desk associate and plans to attend East Carolina University to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Founded in 2001, the Louise R. Lester Foundation builds on the charitable works of Mrs. Louise Robertson Lester. Mrs. Lester was a native of Martinsville, Va., and she studied interior design, architecture and art. She was an accomplished artist, producing beautiful paintings, and a collection of her poetry has been published under the title of her life’s motto, “Life, Love and Laughter.” Scholarships are available for students facing financial challenges to continue their college education.

Kaila Smith, 20, received the Washington Noon Rotary and the Doris Eakes Scholarships. The Roper resident is part of the nursing program and plans to become a neonatal nurse practitioner. She is the daughter of Connie and Edward Smith, and she currently works at Chowan County Emergency Services as an emergency medical technician (EMT). She attended NERSBA, and she holds an Associate in Science and an Associate in General Education. Doris Wallace Eakes, originally from Beaufort County, started this endowment to memorialize her father, Carmer Wallace, and her husband Joseph Eakes. Doris and her husband owned numerous nursing homes and shared a passion for good nursing care. Antonio Swain, 34, received the Louise R. Lester Foundation Scholarship. He is the son of Clintoria Swain of Roper and is part of the electrical engineering program. Lester Foundation builds on the charitable works of Mrs. Louise Robertson Lester. Mrs. Lester was a native of Martinsville, Va., and she studied interior design, architecture and art. Joshua Williams, 19, received the Louise R. Lester Foundation Scholarship. Williams is part of the mechanical engineering program. He is the son of Malisa Hart of Chocowinity, and he attended McKinney Boyd High School. He currently works in the bakery/deli at Food Lion. Founded in 2001, the Louise R. Lester Foundation builds on the charitable works of Mrs. Louise Robertson Lester. Mrs. Lester was a native of Martinsville, Va.,and she studied interior design, architecture and art.
