"Write in November" challenges students & employees to 10,000 words

Write On! Creative Writing Club is hosting “Write in November”. The event is a modified version of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) which asks writers to compose 50,000 words during the month of November.

Write On!’s “Write in November” challenge has a similar goal to NaNoWriMo, which is to get words on the page. For its event, Write On! has set a goal of 10,000 words (about 20 double-spaced typed pages). Individuals meeting the goal at the end of the month are eligible for prizes awarded by Write On!.

What to write:

  • Anything! The type of writing isn’t important; putting words on the page is. Reaching 10,000 words is the goal.
  • Many people use this event as an opportunity to create a first draft of a text they’ve been thinking about or intending to write.
  • The document can contain one long writing or many short writings.
  • Fiction and non-fiction writing are both accepted.
    • Examples of fiction writing:
      • Novels/novellas
      • Short stories
      • Poetry
      • Screenplays
    • Examples non-fiction writing:
      • Journaling
      • Writing letters
      • Recording family or local stories
      • Recording local or world events

Rules:

  • The contest is open to BCCC students, faculty, and staff.
  • The writing must occur between Nov. 1 at 12:01 a.m. and Nov. 30 at 11:59 p.m.
    • Pre-planning ideas is okay, but all words counted for the contest must be written in the month of November.
  • Topics must be appropriate for the college environment.
  • No editing, revision, or document formatting is required.
  • To enter your submission, email it Elizabeth Gagnon (elizabethn6660@beaufortccc.edu)
    • All submissions are due by 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30.
    • Submissions must be submitted in .docx format.
    • Those reaching 10,000 words or more will be awarded prizes.

Prize winners will be announced in December. If you have any questions about Write On! or this contest, contact Elizabeth Gagnon or Suzanne Stotesbury (suzanne.stotesbury@beaufortccc.edu).
