Upcoming classes at the Washington County Center



Beaufort County Community College is offering the following classes at the Washington County Center in Roper to help you gain new skills or just keep fit. To register, call 252-940-6375 or email continuingeducation@beaufortccc.edu. Students can register and pay online for any of these classes.

Notary Public

This 6-hour course is required for persons interested in applying for notary public commissions for the State of North Carolina. Various topics related to the duties of a notary public will be covered. Individuals should review the Notary qualifications list on the Secretary of State’s web site located at: http://www.secretary.state.nc.us/notary/ prior to registering for class. Per NC Secretary of State Guidelines, students will have to pass an exam to complete the class requirements. Students will be required to show a state issued photo ID and their social security card in class. This is a requirement from the Secretary of State’s office. A textbook, Notary Public Guidebook 2016 Edition, is available in the BCCC Bookstore for $27. Books will available at the start of class, and students should make book reservations at the time of registration. This $70 class will take place from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 13.

Forklift Training

This class is based on the National Safety Council’s (NSC) Forklift Training Program. Students will review an overview of forklift operation, inspection, and safe use of the forklift truck. They will learn how to inspect the truck, and how to determine lift limitations. Students will also learn how to understand the center of gravity and how that goes along with safe operation to properly lift limitations and learn how to understand the center of gravity and how that goes along with safe operation to properly lift a load. They will be responsible for demonstrating proper use by completing an obstacle course along with an inspection. Students must purchase a textbook which comes with a certificate and wallet card from NSC for $6. Textbooks will be handed out at the class and will not sold in the BCCC Bookstore. This $77.25 class will take place from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 24.

OSHA 10

Employers value personnel who understand and apply safe practices on the job. By earning an OSHA 10 card, current employees and applicants prove their willingness to work safely every day. Among the topics covered are; Health and Safety Management Systems, OSHA Record Keeping, Bloodborne Pathogens, Welding Safety, Hand and Power Tools, Walking/Working Surfaces, Hazard Communication, Personal Protective Equipment, Exit Routes and Fire Protection, Electrical Safety, Lockout, Industrial Hygiene, Hearing Conservation, and more. This class is an excellent resume builder! This class will be offered twice this spring. The first class will take place from 5:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. from February 15-17. A second class will take place from April 12-26 at the same hours. The class costs $78.

Tai Chi

This ancient Chinese exercise art has become a popular pastime for Americans. This class meets twice each week to give you sessions of gentle stretching and breathing. Tai Chi improves strength, flexibility, balance, and bone density, and it maintains muscle mass. Folks who participate often report that they just feel better. Please join Eric Humphries and learn the “8 Essential Pieces of Brocade” which are the foundation of Tai Chi. Two classes will take place this spring. The first will run from 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays March 1-March 31. A second class will run from April 12-May 12. Classes cost $45.
