Limited scholarships available for Summer Enrichment Programs for Kids & Teens

This summer, Beaufort County Community College will offer in-person Summer Enrichment Programs for Kids and Teens on campus. The classes offer a variety of experiences— including technology, cooking, makeup, theatre, arts and outdoor safety­— for youth of varying ages. To make the programs accessible to more families, BCCC will offer one free class to every child. Parents will need to apply for a scholarship to take advantage of this offer. Flower Pot Bread Baking

Rachel Jordan of Rachel K’s Bakery will lead this program for rising 6th graders through rising 9th graders. They will learn about yeast breads and make them in flower pots. Students will take their flower pots home to continue making good bread for their families. This $45 program will take place on June 29 at 5:30 p.m.

Ice Cream

Chef Scott Clark will lead this program for rising 6th graders through rising 9th graders. The class will build a base custard and churn vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice creams. They will finish class with an ice cream social. This $45 program will take place at 5:30 p.m. on July 13.

Drone Camp

Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders can learn to fly a drone! Participants will be issued a drone kit, learn about the parts of a drone, and how to safely handle it. They will learn about aviation history, and how hot air balloons, fixed wing airplanes and drones fly. They will fly a drone using a smartphone as the remote controller and learn how to code the drone to fly by itself. The program will spend four days on BCCC’s campus and use the auditorium for drone flying inside, and weather permitting, they will also fly outside. On Friday, the program will take a field trip to Inner Banks STEM Center in Washington, N.C. to experience flying both a desktop flight training device and a full motion airplane flight simulator. This class is made possible by the Inner Banks STEM Center. The program will take place from July 19- July 22 and costs $90.

3-D Modeling and Printing

3-D Printing has many manufacturing, scientific, and medical applications. In BCCC’s CAD lab, rising 6th graders and up will set up a design and manufacturing lab complete with two 3-D printers. They will use computers to create three dimensional renderings of an object, employing geometric constraints and extrusions to complete the plan. Finally, participants will set up and run a 3-D printer to create that object that they will carry home. All supplies included. This $90 program will take place at 5:50 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 20-29.

The Tai Chi Kid

Rising 4th graders to rising 8th graders will spend four mornings becoming grounded in the basic moves of this ancient martial art. They will develop balance, stability, and graceful moves as they experience a pleasant hour of fellowship. On nice days the program will practice Tai Chi outside. The $30 program will take place at 9:00 a.m. from July 19 - July 22.

Makeup, Hair, and Nails

Rising 6th graders to rising 9th graders will join Kim Moulden, BCCC’s Lead Instructor of Cosmetology, to get great advice for teen aesthetics such as keeping skin clear and fresh by using proper hygiene. Participants will learn the right makeup skills to enhance their best features, and they will explore hair styling basics for busy teens, and learn the best way to apply nail polish and keep healthy nails. Each participant will receive a lipstick applicator, eye shadow applicator, mascara applicator, makeup sponge, and a hairbrush. The program has plenty of supplies for in-class practice, and participants may bring their own makeup and hair tools. This $50 program will be offered twice, once on July 19 and 21, and again on July 27 and July 29.
