BCCC Foundation congratulates scholarship recipients
The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients for the Fall 2021 semester. Registration for the Spring 2022 16-week classes ends Dec. 10. While the Beaufort Promise covers all tuition and fees through May 2023, students can apply for scholarships to cover the cost of textbooks.
Marlin Collier, 26, received the Thomas Minges Pepsi Cola Scholarship. The Pantego resident is a nursing student. Collier attended Southside High School and plans to get a Master of Science in Nursing to become a case worker. Collier is the child of Larry and Delores Edwards of Chocowinity and is the spouse of Eric Collier.
Two Thomas Minges/Pepsi Cola Scholarships are provided annually to qualified students who are enrolled full time and a resident of a qualifying county. Recipients may also be high school students entering college in the fall semester. Students must exhibit academic achievement with a GPA average of 3.0 or better and special awards, job experiences and community activities are considered for final award.
Mary Corey, 55, received the Vidant Beaufort Health Scholarship. The Greenville resident is part of the pre-nursing program. She attended North Pitt High School. Corey plans to pursue an Associate Degree in Nursing. She currently has a Registered Medical Assistant certificate and an Associate in General Education.
The Vidant Beaufort Health Scholarship is available to qualified students from nursing, MLT, nursing assistant, phlebotomy and any other curriculum or continuing education medical-related field.
Meredith Dillard, 21, received the John & Geneva Morgan Scholarship. The Greenville resident is a nursing student. Dillard attended Grays Creek High School. She has plans to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing to become a travel nurse. Dillard is the daughter of Jerry and Kimberly Dillard of Fayetteville.
Established in 2016 by the Beaufort County Mental Health Association, the scholarship represents the tireless efforts of John and Geneva Morgan as they advocated for citizens affected by mental illness. Geneva Morgan’s nursing career spanned 40 years of service providing care to the pediatric population of the community. In addition to administering to the needs of the pediatric patient, she focused upon alleviating the stigma associated with mental illness. It was the care, compassion and wellbeing for the often-forgotten patient that gave her the most joy. John became her partner in advocacy after retirement. John and Geneva Morgan through their life’s work have modeled civic responsibility and community engagement that others should aspire to emulate. Scholarships are provided to senior level nursing students with a minimum GPA of 2.5. The student must be a Beaufort County resident and participate in community events honoring the Morgan legacy of community involvement.
Melissa Lewis, 39, received the Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarship. The Windsor resident is part of the medical billing and coding program. She attended Bertie High School. The mother of two is a program integrity investigator for the Washington County Department of Social Services. She plans to pursue a career in healthcare. Lewis has an Associate in Arts in Foundations of Business and a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration with a concentration in Health Management.
Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing a career in the medical field. Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy is now known as O’Neal’s Pharmacy. Qualifying students will have a 2.5 GPA or greater and must be a resident of Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell or Washington County. Students must demonstrate financial need.
Madison LeNeave, 22, received the James Wyatt Blanks Scholarship. The Greenville resident is a nursing student. She attended D.H. Conley High School. She is the daughter of Jesse and Andrea Leneave and plans to become a pediatric nurse. LeNeave also holds as Associate in General Education.
Established in 2005 with memorials and gifts from friends and family, the “Wyatt” Blanks scholarship is awarded annually to a student with at least a 2.5 GPA. His parents Loretta and Wayne Blanks, Sr. wanted to assist students who are working toward a 2-year degree.
Mary Osborn, 18, received the Frances M. Barnes Memorial Scholarship. The Washington resident is a pre-nursing student. Osborn attended Bear Grass Charter School and is currently a server at Down on Main Street. She plans to become a registered nurse. She is the daughter of Heather and Tim Osborn of Washington.
Frances M. Barnes Trust scholarships are awarded to Martin County curriculum and continuing educations attending BCCC who intend to reside and work in Martin County upon course completion. Students must meet respective scholarship guidelines for the curriculum or continuing education program of study, show satisfactory academic progress and demonstrate financial need.
Melissa Speece, 46, received the Tayloe Memorial Scholarship. The Greenville resident is working toward a Practical Nurse Diploma. She attended Wells High School of New York. The mother of three currently works at Ayden Court Rehab. Speece has a human services degree, and she plans to become a geriatric nurse. She is the daughter of Vivian Cook of Greenville.
Mrs. Sam Tim (Tay) Carter, with encouragement from her children Libba, Lou, Clay, and Mary, started the Tayloe Family Endowment in 2003, in memory of her grandfather, Dr. David Thomas Tayloe. The endowment also honors his numerous descendants who have made significant contributions to the medical community of Beaufort County. Scholarships generated by this endowment are awarded to BCCC students enrolled in any medically related program.
Michael Senn, 55, received the Stephanie Z. Jones Scholarship. The Greenville resident is a medical lab technology student. Senn attended Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing and a Master of Business Administration in Management. He plans to finish his medical lab tech degree and start saving lives.
This scholarship provides financial support for BCCC students in the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program, or other medical programs. Stephanie was a graduate of the BCCC MLT program and was a phlebotomist at the Leo G. Jenkins Cancer Center in Greenville, NC. She was lost in 2006 while administering first aid at an accident scene on River Road. She was the mother of three, a volunteer youth sports coach, and assistant Scoutmaster at Troop 99 in Washington. This scholarship assists others who model Stephanie’s academic achievement and community service; helping others with great skill, compassion and dedication.
