BCCC TRiO students participate in Level Up Work Ready Initiative

Students in the TRiO/Student Support Services program at Beaufort County Community College participated in the Level Up Work Ready Initiative sponsored by Koinonia Community Solutions in Greenville, N.C. Students spent the morning at the organization’s job fair on March 3.

TRiO students had the opportunity to meet and network with area employers, ranging from Vidant Health to the Kaleidoscope Child Care Center, who were seeking applicants for part-time and full-time positions. Agency representatives offered resume and interviewing coaching.

Tashawna Scott, TRIO Student Development Coordinator, said, “Even though some of our scholars weren’t looking for immediate employment, they had a chance to talk with human resource professionals who provided helpful information about resumes and the interview process as well as the soft skills most desired by employers.”

Attorney Watsi Sutton, a Beaufort County attorney, was excited to see students from her area and helped them feel comfortable navigating the event. She directed the students to key exhibits. The scholars who attended are thankful that Dr. LaTonya Nixon, VP of Student Services at BCCC connected students to the event.

TRIO/Student Support Services is a holistic student development program dedicated to helping each student reach their full academic potential. Funds are provided by the US Department of Education to serve students who are either first generation, limited income and/or students with disabilities with a full range of academic support, career development, and personal growth services and activities.
