BCCC Dedicates Counseling Center in Memory of Sue Brookshire

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation has dedicated its counseling center in memory of Sue Brookshire. The naming acknowledges a new generous donation from the Brookshire family. The Sue Brookshire Counseling Center houses two counselors and the Accessibility Services Coordinator. Miriam Suzanne “Sue” Brookshire served as a counselor at the college for 25 years until her retirement in 2012. She passed away in 2019.

After completing her bachelor’s degree at Miami University in Ohio, she earned three master’s degrees from East Carolina University, exemplifying her commitment to education and lifelong learning.

At the college she served as a counselor, helping students navigate both challenges related to their programs and in their personal lives. As part of one of her degrees, she implemented a student success course that she insisted should be taught by student services staff so that they could strengthen their bond with students. Through this course she found a new love for teaching.

Colleagues Kimberly Jackson, Mandy Jones, and Theresa Edwards shared memories of Brookshire, as did her son Matthew Brookshire.

Sue is survived by her husband Curtis, her sons Marc and Matthew, and their spouses Sarah Moore and Luis Jaramillo; her grandchildren Lilley, Rose, and Henry; and her sister Diane Cox, sister-in-law Martha Brown, and their families.

BCCC updated its naming policy to include classrooms and laboratories, whereas previously only buildings were eligible.
