Summer Enrichment Youth Classes Feature Makeup, Chess, and Fly Fishing



This summer, Beaufort County Community College will offer 38 classes through its Summer Enrichment Youth Program across Beaufort, Hyde, and Washington Counties. Some classes are offered in partnership with Inner Banks STEM Center, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Le Moulin Rouge de Danse, Beaufort-Hyde-Martin Library System, and Washington County Schools. The classes offer a variety of experiences— including technology, cooking, makeup, babysitting, and outdoors and nature activities­— for youth of varying ages. To make the programs accessible to more families, BCCC has scholarships available for qualified families. Guardians or parents will need to apply for a scholarship to take advantage of this offer. Things with Wings (1st grade to rising 4th)

Students in this camp will learn more about bluebirds, butterflies, bees, and even chickens. Each day they will learn about a thing with wings and create a related art or craft project to take home. They will also explore the BCCC campus to discover these subjects, and they will mount a bluebird box on the campus. This $110 class will run Monday through Thursday mornings from June 26-June 29.

Poetry Slam (rising 6th, 7th, and 8th grades)

Poetry is an art form that allows writers to use words to express what they see, feel, and think. Alecia Rhoe will introduce different poetry types, well known poets, and understanding how to create a poem from a single word, thought, and topic. Participants will have an opportunity to create different poems while also understanding how voice and body language play a part in expression. The last evening of class will be a poetry slam. This $65 class takes place on Monday-Thursday, June 26-June 29 in the evenings.

Piano Camp (rising 5th grade to rising 9th grade)

Students will have keyboards for learning simple tunes that will lead to the pleasure of making music. Playing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” gives a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. Students may discover a desire to continue musical training after this experience. This summer there are two different classes to choose from: an evening class from June 26 - 29 and a morning class from July 10- 3. This class costs $65.

Tying Flies and Catching Fish (rising 5th grade and above)

There is fine fly fishing to be found nearby on the Pamlico River. Young anglers can enjoy the sport and precision of making flies and using them to catch red drum, speckled trout, and striped bass. Dave Lekson is a seasoned fisherman who enjoys tying his own flies. In four sessions, students will learn fly tying basics and produce at least three flies. On the last meeting, the class will go fishing, and Dave will teach fly casting techniques. All supplies are included. This $90 morning class will take place from July 10 – 13.

Programming Basics for Gaming and Web Design (rising 5th grade and above)

Using Massachusetts Institute of Technology open-source programming guides, this class will approach the basics of coding for building games. Students will learn how to be next writer of something big like Fortnite or Minecraft. The coding skills explored will also help them explore website development. This $95 morning class will take place from July 10 – 13.

Makeup, Hair, and Nails (rising 6th grade to rising 9th grade)

Kim Moulden, BCCC’s Lead Instructor of Cosmetology, will give great advice for teen esthetics, including, keeping skin clear and fresh by using proper hygiene and the right makeup skills to enhance features. Students will explore hair styling basics for busy teens and learn the best way to apply nail polish and keep healthy nails. Each student will receive a lipstick applicator, an eye shadow applicator, mascara applicator, makeup sponge, and a hairbrush. The class has plenty of supplies for in-class practice, and students may bring their own makeup and hair tools. This $70 evening class takes place July 11 and July 13.

Chess, The Queen’s Gambit (rising 4th grade to rising 8th grade)

Whether students are brand-new players or just want to improve their game, this camp will serve them. Everyone will leave knowing the popular opening move, The Queen’s Gambit, and everyone will enjoy four days at the chess boards with a great instructor. This $70 morning class will take place from July 17-20.
