Campus Recognizes Denim Day as Part of Sexual Assault Awareness Week

As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Week, the Student Services Division encouraged students and employees to wear denim in recognition of Denim Day. Professors Jessama Allender and Joseph Alford held an online presentation about the significance of the event.

Denim Day is held on the last Wednesday of Sexual Assault Awareness Month to combat victim-blaming and raise awareness about sexual violence. In 1998, the Italian Supreme Court ruled that a rape survivor invited violence because the blue jeans she was wearing made the attack by consensual. In response to the ruling, women in the Italian Parliament wore denim in protest. The organization Peace Over Violence held the first recognition of Denim Day in 1999 in Los Angeles.
