BCCC Foundation congratulates spring scholarship recipients

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients for the Spring 2021 semester. Registration is now open for the Summer 2021 and Fall 2021 semesters. Summer classes will include a 8-week classes, as well as two 5-week mini-mesters for students. The 5-week mini-mesters are ideal for students who need to complete certain pre-requisites, for students who are home for the summer from a university or for students who only have a smaller window in which to take classes. Qualifying students can receive financial aid. Classes will be offered in a variety of formats:

Synchronous: These are classes that meet using live video between the instructor and class. Students must log in to Blackboard Collaborate at the scheduled days and times in order to participate in the class.

Blended: These are classes that are mostly live video meetings on specific days and times but also have some online coursework that can be completed throughout the week.

Hybrid: These are classes that are mostly online but have 1-2 class meetings each week using live video on scheduled days and times.

Online: These are classes that are 100% online. Students do not have to meet with their instructor at a specific day or time and can complete coursework throughout the week.

Michelle Boyd Cahoon, 36, received the Louise R. Lester Foundation Scholarship. Cahoon is working toward an Associate in Arts. She is a mother of one, wife of Walter Cahoon Jr. and the daughter of Hazel and Troy Boyd of Vanceboro. The Belhaven resident attended West Craven High School. She plans to work as work as a nutritionist after earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Founded in 2001, the Louise R. Lester Foundation builds on the charitable works of Mrs. Louise Robertson Lester. Mrs. Lester was a native of Martinsville, Va. She was an accomplished artist, producing beautiful paintings and poetry. The foundation seeks to effect positive change in the communities and lives of the people who are served through its philanthropic support. They seek to build effective relationships with grantees through a willingness to understand the challenges they face. Scholarships are available for students facing financial challenges to continue their college education.

McKenzie Drew, 20, received the Frances M. Barnes Trust Scholarship. The Williamston resident is part of the Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) program. Drew attended Riverside High School and plans to work at Vidant Medical Center. She is the daughter of Beverly and Mike Drew of Williamston.

Frances M. Barnes Trust scholarships are awarded to Martin County curriculum and continuing educations attending BCCC who intend to reside and work in Martin County upon course completion. Students must meet respective scholarship guidelines for the curriculum or continuing education program of study, show satisfactory academic progress and demonstrate financial need.

Matthew May, 35, received the Robert Farish Scholarship. The Greenville resident is part of the business administration program. He is the son of Matthew and Lesha May, the husband of LaShonda May and a father of four. May attended North Pitt High School and plans to move forward in the finance department at Greenville Utilities where he currently works.

Rebecca Farish established this endowment in 2005 to honor the memory of her husband with scholarships that are reflective of his talents and interests in life. The scholarships are awarded to students in the business, criminal justice or automotive technology programs each year, and are based on need.

Raina Roach, 31, received the Hannah Page Scholarship. The Winterville resident is part of the early childhood education program. She attended D.H. Conley High School and holds an Associate in Applied Science in Medical Office Administration. She currently works at Pitt County Schools and plans to transfer to a university.

Family and friends established the Hannah Page Endowment in December 1999. She was a beloved faculty member in the BCCC Business Division. The endowment provides an annual scholarship to a medical office administration student.

Megan Scott, 21, received the Doris Eakes Scholarship. The Colerain resident is part of the nursing program. Scott attended Bertie Early College High School and plans to attend family nurse practitioner school. She is the daughter of Beverly and Mike Drew of Williamston. She currently works at Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center as a certified nurse aide II.

Doris Wallace Eakes, originally from Beaufort County, started this endowment to memorialize her father, Carmer Wallace, and her husband Joseph Eakes. Doris and her husband owned numerous nursing homes and shared a passion for good nursing care. Thus, the proceeds from this endowment support nursing scholarships.

Michelle Smith, 34, received the Marie Robinson Nursing Scholarship. Smith is working on her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She is a mother of one. The Greenville resident attended Rocky Mount Senior High School and holds an Associate Degree in Nursing from BCCC. She plans to work as work as a nurse practitioner. Smith currently works as a registered nurse at Vidant Medical Center.

The Marie R. Robinson Nursing Scholarship is for a deserving student in the BCCC Nursing Program. Ms. Robinson, born 1922, was a lifelong resident of Washington, N.C. who graduated from the Tayloe Hospital School of Nursing in Washington and was a Registered Nurse for Beaufort County Hospital until her retirement. She was devoted to her family, her many friends and her nursing colleagues. Her mission was to serve others.

Melissa Speece, 45, received the Harold & Louise Lane Scholarship. Speece is working on her Associate Degree in Nursing. She is a mother of three and the daughter of Vivian Rajca and William Dingle Sr. of Greenville. The Greenville resident attended Wells High School in Wells, N.Y. and holds an Associate in Applied Science in Human Resources. She plans to work as an administrative registered nurse specializing in wound care. Speece currently works at East Carolina Rehab and Wellness as a wound technician and medication aide.

Established in 1998 in memory of Harold Alton Lane, Jr., and in honor of Constance Lane Howard, by their parents Harold Lane, Sr. and his wife Louise, this endowment provides annual scholarships to one or more students in the nursing and or an associate degree program.

Morgan Taylor, 20, received the Frances M. Barnes Memorial Scholarship. The Williamston resident is part of the nursing program. She attended Riverside High School and plans to work at work as a nurse while earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She is the daughter of Mike and Michelle Taylor of Williamston.
