Pell Grants Available for Summer Students

An eligible student may receive the Federal Pell Grant for summer semester even if they received a full Federal Pell Grant during the fall and spring semesters. Year-round Pell allows students to receive up to 150 percent of a regular grant award over the course of the academic year to allow students to continue taking classes in the summer and finish their degrees faster than they would otherwise.

With careful planning, Pell Grant recipients may take advantage of this regulation to earn their degree faster. However, students should keep in mind the summer term is short term (5-10 weeks of instructional time) compared to fall and spring semesters (16 weeks of instructional time). Students should also consult with their academic advisor to develop a manageable course load for the shorter summer term. Enrollment status are the same for fall, spring or summer. Full-time: 12 or more credit hour; Quarter-time: 9-11 credit hours; Half-time: 6-8 credit hours ; Less than half-time: 1-5 credit hours. Students are not required to carry a full-time load.

To be eligible for additional (150%) Pell Grants funds students must be:

  • Pell eligible based upon FAFSA results
  • Enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours) during the summer term
  • Maintaining satisfactory academic progress (SAP)
  • Pell Grant Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU) remaining

For students who were enrolled part-time (less than 12 credit hours) for fall or spring, there is no minimum credit requirement to receive a summer Pell Grant (unless required by your EFC from your FAFSA results). You can use the remainder of your annual Pell Grant amount during the summer with no minimum credit requirement.

Note: The provisions of the law state that any Pell Grant received will be included in determining the student’s 600% Pell Grant duration of eligibility and Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU) limits.
